2014 Kelly Cup Results

“Down by a point going into the final day of the 11th Annual Kelly Cup, the Ontario side came out of the blocks quickly and decisively to capture their 3rd consecutive Cup in London, Ontario 17 ½ - 10 ½.

The matches, which were originally scheduled for Greenhills Golf & Country Club, had to be moved from the rain-soaked course to two new venues due to a 5” rainstorm the day before the event.  “In my mind”, said Ontario Captain Vito Cisternino, “the real hero of this event, is Grant Gulych, who was on the phone immediately upon learning the course was closed trying to secure a suitable course or courses, while players were already en route to London.”

RESULTS

Day 1 matches (Nine holes of Four-ball or best ball followed by 9 holes of Foursomes or alternate shot) were held at nearby Echo Valley.  Day 2 matches (Nine holes of individual Stableford followed by 9 holes of individual match play) were moved to Forest City National.

The Michigan side got off to a nice start winning Day 1,  5 ½ - 4 ½ but, led by Captain Vito Cisternino (Woodbridge), Ontario won its first three matches on Day 2 and  never looked back.

Top point getters for Ontario were Grant Gulych (St. Thomas, Ont.) and George Harris (London, Ont.) with 3 ½ points each and Bob Richardson (Keswick, Ont.) with 3 points.  For Michigan, Don Smith (Hartland, Mich.) was the top point getter for Michigan with 3 points.

The rest of the winning side was:  Dennis Babcock (Chatham, Ont.), Rick Wilson (St. Thomas, Ont.), Michael Hunter (St.Thomas, Ont), Dave DiNicolo (Toronto, Ont.), Paul Kelly (Uxbridge, Ont.), and John Goodman (Dundas, Ont.).

The US side included: Captain Jeremie Lopez (Belleville, Mich.), Charles Henry (Caseville, Mich.), Brent Davies (Clarkston, Mich.), Mike Terrill (Bad Axe, Mich.), Jack Black (Westland, Mich.), Chris Boka (Canton, Mich.), Ken Burk (Capac, Mich.), Joel Michaels (Southfield, Mich.), and Rob Ruley (Holland, Ohio)

At the team dinner, the Andrew G. Carrigan Order of Merit awards were presented to Vito Cisternino, Chris Boka, and Paul Kelly.

The Kelly Cup matches have been played in honor of tour member, Thomas Kelly, who died suddenly on the golf course "with the fellas" in 2003.  In 2009, the tour awarded a $1,400 scholarship to the Kelly grandchildren for their college education. Both of the younger Kelly's are honor roll students. Thomas was very active in teaching golf to underprivileged kids in metro Detroit and was a very proud of his USGTF membership. His USGTF bag tag was prominently displayed from his casket at his funeral.  His widow, Barbara, still lives adjoining the 10th hole at Gateway GC in Romulus, Mich.  A memorial stone is still displayed at Gateway, commemorating Thomas’s contribution to junior golf.

The 2015 matches will return to Michigan at a yet-to-be-determined site.  Brent Davies will Captain the US side while Bob Richardson will lead the Ontario side.  Best wishes to our new Captains for next year’s event.

August 2014 Gateway Event Results

Due to all the rain the day of the event, golf was canceled for the day making this the first time that an event was not held in Michigan. All players who showed up to the event were given Kelly Cup a participation point.  The next event is the season finale Kelly Cup being held in London, Ontario at Greenhills Golf and Country Club.
